Importance in national and EU level

Habitats

7140, 7160, 9010*, 91D0*, 9080*, 6430, 6450, 3260 (* priority habitat of EU Habitat Directive Annex I)

Territory is one of the most valuable sites in the Eastern Latvia containing transition mires and quaking bogs, Fennoscandian mineral-rich springs and springfens.

Flora

It is a unique site that is characterised by great species diversity and holds one of the largest population of Saxifraga hirculus* in Latvia. Protected species of vascular plants and bryophytes: Saxifraga hirculus*, Hamatocaulis vernicosus*, Carex atherodes, Aconitum lasiostomum and the great number of Orchidaceae species (* - species of EU Habitat Directive Annex II).

Fauna

Diversity of birds is not important because of small area of the site and habitats are valuable only for some rare and protected bird species of national and EU Bird Directive, for example: Grus grus, Crex crex and Lanius collurio.

Main threats

At the first part of last century the natural course of Veseta River bed was changed and the encroachment of shrubs and pine takes place in Veseta River floodplain mire threatening the growth of Saxifraga hirculus and Hamatocaulis vernicosus – species of EU Habitat Directive.

Planned actions and results:

  1. Elaboration of management plan.
  2. Removing shrub and pine in transition mires of the floodplain.
  3. Preparation of booklet about the site.
  4. Establishment and installation of information boards and signs.
  5. Monitoring of the influence of management actions.
