Kalnciems meadows Total site surface area (ha): 178 NATURA 2000 Code: LV0528600 Site description The site is situated in the central part of Latvia. Territory near Kalnciems is compact flood-plain meadow, which can be divided in 3 habitat groups: The Northern part of the territory is overgrown Northern boreal alluvial meadows (6450) with dense bush and only occasionally free flood-plain meadows can be found on the riverside, covering about 35% of the area. Second largest habitat group is grassland with regular management, predominantly mowing, in total covering ca 45% of the area. The remaining ca 20% of the territory is artificially created marshes with elevated ground-water level. Nature values The density of calling Crex crex* is among the highest in central Latvia. It holds remarkable diversity of breeding waders and is one of best sites for Porzana porzana, Limosa limosa and Philomachus pygnax in the region. Site is a part of an IBA that meets IBA criteria A1 for Crex crex*. Altogether site hosts 14 bird species listed in Annex I of Birds Directive and 8 of them are targeted by the project including 2 priority species Crex crex* and Aquila pomarina*. Site also qualifies as pSCI containing 4 habitat types listed in Annex I of Habitats Directive and all of them are targeted by the project including a priority habitat 1630* Boreal Baltic coastal meadows.
