Procedure of individual protection of the nature reserve "Raíupe Vallley"

On October 4, draft regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers “Regulations Regarding Individual Protection of the Nature Reserve “Raíupe Valley”” prepared by the Ministry of the Environment was presented in the meeting of State Secretaries. Draft regulations are prepared on the basis of the nature protection plan of the nature reserve “Raíupe Valley” approved on June 6, 2007.

The prepared draft regulations stipulate to divide the nature reserve in four functional zones – the zone of adjustable conditions, resticted nature reserve zone, nature park zone and neutral zone. The restrictions of economic activity are determined by taking into account the aim of establishment of each zone.

The nature reserve “Raíupe Valley” is a significant protection area of boreal forests, spring marshes and different specially protected meadow biotopes (springs and spring marshes rich in mineral substances, dry meadows in calcareous soils, fallow meadows rich in species, boreal forests, stands of eutrophic high caulescent plants, flood-plain meadows). A lot of rare species of plants and animals are found within the territory. The high marsh biotope is significant, as well. The area of the restricted nature reserve is 2204 ha, it is located in the administrative territories of Dundaga and Valdgale parishes of Talsi district and Ance and Puze parishes of Ventspils district. It is acknowledged to be the specially protected nature territory of the European Union scale of Natura 2000.

The nature protection plans for specially protected nature territories are developed in order to coordinate the interests of nature protection, the use of natural resources and sustainable regional development by ensuring the maintenance of natural values of the territory, as well as in order to provide a favourable protection status for those specially protected species and specially protected biotopes for the purpose of the protection of which this territory was established.

Developer of the plan: "Baltic Environmental Forum" and the manager - Jolanta Bâra. The development period of the plan – from March 1, 2006 to April 30, 2007.

The development of the nature management plan for the nature reserve “Raíupe Valley” took place within the framework of a larger project – LIFE-Nature “Restoration of Latvian floodplains for EU priority species and habitats” which is being implemented by the Latvian Fund for Nature.

Within the development process of the nature management plan an informative meeting, work of experts, three meetings of the supervisory group and public consultations took place. Approval of the individual protection regulations was based on the proposal of zoning of the territory mentioned in the plan.

  • On April 4, 2006 an informative meeting was held, where all the interested people were acquainted with the development process, the aims, tasks and other measures of the plan.
  • On August 29, 2006 the 1st meeting of the supervisory group took place.
  • On October 20, 2006 the 2nd meeting of the supervisory group took place.
  • On Febrary 8, 2007 the 3rd meeting of the supervisory group took place.
  • On March 8, 2007 public consultations of the nature protection plan of the restricted nature reserve “Raíupe Valley” took place.

Two informative stands are placed in the territory of the nature reserve during this year and a booklet on natural values, the necessary management and regulations on visiting the territory is being prepared. Read more about the nature reserve "Raíupe Valley" here
