Latvian Fund for Nature takes part into discussion: Preparing for the Lithuanian Presidency - Opportunities, Challenges and Prospects for a Better Environment

Starting from June 1st until December 31st Lithuania is Presidency of EU Council.  The Ministry of Environment of Lithuania has detected three main priorities in environmental area:

  1. Effective protection of the environment - the promotion of environmental protection requirements into other EU policies and consistent implementation of the requirements of environmental protection;
  2. Climate change - focusing on the EU's role as a leader in the holding of the international debate on climate change;
  3. International co-operation.

At the end of May, 2013, Latvian Fund for Nature as a member of European Environmental Bureau (EEB) participated in the discussion of priorities before the start of the Presidency. European Environmental Bureau has prepared its vision for the environmental issues that should be addressed in Lithuania during its presidency. EEB main priority issues highlighted are:

  1. Sustainable Development
  2. Stop climate change
  3. Save energy
  4. Improve the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive
  5. Marine protection in the Baltic Sea
  6. Protect high environmental standards at international level
  7. Protect the public from hazardous chemicals
  8. Support the development of an ambitious air package
  9. Conserve nature and biodiversity
  10. Promote better environmental governance

Latvian Fund for Nature will continue to participate in the evaluation of Lithuanian presidency set priorities and implementation of them.

Latvian Presidency of the Council is scheduled for 2015, more information is available www.es2015.lv.
