Final seminar of the EC LIFE-Nature Project Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan in Latvia in Usma Municipality In November 7, 2008 in Usma Municipality the second Final seminar of the EC LIFE Project Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan was held. It was organised for the stakeholders and Project partners of 2 project sites Stikli Mires and Klāņi Mire Nature Reserves. At the start of the seminar the project manager Māra Pakalne gave an overview about the project progress. Afterwards Juris Nusbaums told about the results of raised bog restoration in the project sites but Valda Baroniņa about the informative and educational activities of the project. After that the project partners and stakeholders had a possibility to express their opinion about the project. In the seminar the results of the raised bog management were discussed. The 135 peat dams built on the drainage ditches in Vasenieki Mire have stopped the further degradation of the raised bog habitats. It was proved by the results groundwater level and habitat monitoring in Vasenieki Mire and Klāņi Mire. The groundwater level in the degraded areas has raise and raised bog species that include vascular plants and bryophytes have started to re-establish. The new documentary film Life in the mires produced by the Association of Documentary Film and Photography ELM MEDIA was demonstrated to the seminar participants. After that the seminar the participants had a possibility to take part in an excursion to Vasenieki Mire nature trail and watching tower to observe the results of raised bog restoration as the nature trail in Vasenieki Mire passes nearby this area. Interview about the Final seminar was given to regional TV Company.
