Management Plan Steering Group meetings for Stikli Mires Nature Reserve, Public hearing

1. On July 8, 2005 the first Management Plan Steering Group meeting for Stikli Mires Nature Reserve took place in Puze Municipality ((30 participants). The management plan expert Ilze Rēriha informed about the progress of the elaboration of the management plans for Stikli Mires Nature Reserve and reported about fauna and flora studies in territory. There are known 20 protected vascular plant species, 16 bryophyte species, three mammal species (two species of them are from Council Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora), 20 birds species (17 species of them are from Bird Directive) and five invertebrate species. Project manager of main activities Juris Nusbaums told about the elaboration of technical designs for building of dams, nature trail and a watching tower Vasenieki Mire. He reported also about preparation of designs for building of dams, nature trail and watching tower in Vasenieku Mire. Project expert of hydrology Aigars Indriksons informed about the ongoing and planning activities in this project site. After the discussion management plan Steering Group with experts visited the planned nature trail Vasenieku Mire Nature Reserve.

2. On October 7, 2005 the second Management Plan Steering Group meeting for Stikli Mires Nature Reserve took place in Puze Municipality (26 participants).

3. On January 24, 2006 Public hearing on the management plan of Stikli Mires was held in 24.01.2006 (37 participants).  The main subjects of discussion were - increase of the border of the territory in the future - experts suggested to add Seme Mire (active raised bog which borders with Stikli Mires) to the protected territory although peat extraction has been planned there. It was concluded that according to the Latvian legislation Environment Impact Assessment is needed before any peat extraction can be carried in the nearby area of Stikli Mires Nature Reserve.

4. On January 27, 2006 the third meeting of the Management Plan Steering Group for Stikli Mires Nature Reserve took place in Puze Municipality. The participants signed the protocol that the elaboration of management plan is completed and all the participants have been informed about the process of the elaboration of the management plans.

The management plan for Stikli Mires is approved by the Regulations of the Minister of Environment of Latvia on March 31, 2006 (Regulation Nr. 138).
