Thanks to good weather conditions, the cattle and horses grazing one the shores of Lake Engure feel very comfortable. Among them you can see three animals of local cattle breed Latvian Blue. This cattle is grazing on the second project meadow in Krievrags, Íûïciema municipality. When snow and low temperatures will reach Lake Engure, we plan to more them to warmer conditions in one of the nearby farms. But next spring these three will travel to coastal meadows in Mçrsrags where they will graze on restored coastal meadow for the whole grazing season. Next year we hope to purchase more of this breed, to support restoration of this local breed in Latvia. There have been numerous stories told about origin of this species, most of them telling about how this breed originated from the sea. You can reed two of the stories (recorded in 1925 and 1933) in Latvian version of home page. LIFE Engure progress report 2003 Second project report has been completed in autumn 2003.
