Latvian and Estonian environment-friendly demonstration farm network

Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Center, Latvian Fund for Nature and Estonian Fund for Nature have launched a project demo farm - "Environmentally-friendly agriculture demonstration farm network of Latvian and Estonia." Transboundary cooperation process is created a demonstration farm network in order to promote environmentally friendly farming in the countryside. From December 7th to January15th 2010 Latvian farms can apply for participation in the project.

Within two years – 2009-2011 - the project involved the Estonian and Latvian peasants will learn new skills and share experiences and manage their farms sustainable, and together set up a demonstration network in order to present their experiences with anyone. DEMO FARM developments at the farmers will have the opportunity to expand the skills to manage the farm environmentally friendly and economically viable, as well as language skills. A number of experts involved in the project will survey farm to prepare their business plans and make recommendations for sustainable decision-making. Each plan will be compiled information on the natural values and economic opportunities. Farmers will be provided with information materials and prepared to tour manage their farms, to talk about environmentally friendly farming for others.

The project invites to apply farms located in the project area and, in particular - has already implemented an eco-friendly ideas and are ready to continue its work on sustainable development of farming, as well as share experiences with interested parties. Project can apply for membership by completing an application form and sending it to the Latvian Fund for Nature till January 15th 2010. Detailed information about application procedures and selection criteria on our web pages: www.llkc.lv and www.ldf.lv.

"Agricultural activity in productivity is mainly dependent on the fertility of the soil and surrounding ecosystems," explains the LFN manager Inga Raèinska. "But only a small number of local farm every day consciously choose to operate environmentally friendly. And the reason often is that the lack of good examples and guidance on how to operate without harming the environment. Any economic activity affecting the state of the surroundings - the soil, water, plants and animals. Prudently managing the farm, it is possible to increase the diversity of nature, such as coastal forests and grasslands. By design, we want to combine the principles of environmentally sound management of long-term economic interests. "
