Presentation of Mire book on the International Wetlands Day

On February 2, 2009 the book „ Mire Conservation and Management in Especially Protected Nature Areas in Latvia” was presented on the International Wetlands Day in the Ministry of the Environment of Latvia”. The book was published in the frame of the EC LIFE-Nature Project „Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan for Latvia” that was carried out by the Latvian Fund for Nature.

Presentation of the book opened the Project manager Māra Pakalne. Then there was an address by Ilona Mendziņa, Deputy director of Nature Protection Department, Ministry of the Environment of Latvia. After that Vija Buša, Head of Division of Protected Areas from the Ministry of the Environment introduced with the International Wetlands Day.

Then Dr. Mara Pakalne, the manager of the EC LIFE Project "Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan for Latvia” introduced with the Project and the history of book development. The book includes information of nature values of the Project sites – Cena Mire, Stikli Mires, Klāņi Mire and Veseta Floodplain Mires, but the main value of the book is that includes guidelines and recommendations of raised bog habitat conservation, management and monitoring in Latvia. The experience gained within the EC LIFE Project is summarised in the book.

The hall is full of participants

After the presentations the word was given to the authors of the papers and photos (Uldis Muzikants, Voldemārs Spuņģis, Juris Nusbaums, Jānis Ķuze), project partners (Agris Āboliņš) and other participants (Dace Ozola).

The book presentation was completed with the project documentary film produced by “Film and Photo association ELM MEDIA" "Life in Mire".

There were 80 participants of the Mire book presentation and everyone could get a specimen of the book as well as Project Layman’s Report, information booklets about the project sites.
