Final seminar of the EC LIFE-Nature Project “Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan in Latvia” in Olaine

In November 25, 2008 the Final seminar of the EC LIFE-Nature Project “Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan” was held in Olaine Museum of History and Art for the stakeholders and project partners of one of the project sites – Cena Mire Nature Reserve.

At the start of the seminar the project manager Mâra Pakalne gave an overview about the project progress. Afterwards Juris Nusbaums told about the results of raised bog restoration in the project sites but Liene Salmiňa informed about the habitat monitoring that proves the success of the management actions.

After that the project partners and stakeholders had a possibility to express their opinion about the project.

One of the main Project achievements is the restoration of the raised bog habitats in the three Project sites – Cena Mire, Stikli Mires, Klâňi Mire that have been previously drained. By building of 350 peat dams on the drainage ditches, the degradation of the raised bog habitats has been stopped. It is proved also by the results of groundwater and habitat monitoring as after building of dams the groundwater level in the mires has raised and the raised bog species have started to re-establish in the degraded areas.

During the seminar the new documentary film “Life in the mires” produced by the “Association of Documentary Film and Photography ELM MEDIA” was demonstrated to the seminar participants as well as Layman’s Report and other project informative materials distributed to the participants that included also the local schools.

After the film the participants had a possibility to take part in an excursion to Cena Mire nature trail and observe the raised bog in winter. The snow has covered the nature trail and the tower and the view in winter differed very much from summer, but it was very interesting to observe the mire habitats that   included raised bogs, transition mire and Skaists Lake.
