Natura 2000 is a common network of specially protected nature territories across European Union member states. It serves the purpose of safeguarding and conserving various protected plant and animal species.

The Natura 2000 network takes up about 2% of the total territory of the European Union countries. In Latvia, it is 11.9% of the total area and it consists of 336 specially protected nature territories, which all have national protection status as well.
