LIFE project „MIRES” informs about the results of elaboration of management plans

On February 14, 2006 the meeting of the Latvian Fund for Nature was devoted to the LIFE project „MIRES”. The participants of the meeting were introduced with the results of the elaboration of the management plans for the 4 project sites.  After that there was a possibility to see the TV shot about one of the project sites - Cena Mire and a documentary film „ Mire people” produced by Kaspars Goba.

At the start of the meeting the main habitat expert and the co-ordinator of the management plans Valda Baroniņa of the LIFE Project „Implementation of Mire Habitat Management Plan” gave a detailed overview about the results of the elaboration of the management plans in 2005/2006 in the four project sites - Cena Mire, Stikli Mires, Klāņi Mire and Veseta Floodplain Mire. It was the information about the nature values of the project sites, as well as about management actions, and problems that were solved during the elaboration of management plans.

During the elaboration of the management plans in all the project sites protected species, habitats of Latvia and those of EU importance were distinguished and mapped.

The highest diversity of protected habitats has Klāņi Mire Nature Reserve – 10 protected habitats of Latvia and 9 of EU importance. In Veseta Floodplain Mire there are 3 protected habitats of Latvia and 8 of EU importance, in Stikli Mires Nature Reserve 2 protected of Latvia, 7 of EU importance but in Cena Mire – 4 of EU importance). The 4 habitats – active raised bogs (7110*), bog woodland (91D0*), Fennoscandian deciduous swamp forest (9080*) and Western taiga (9010*) are habitats of priority conservation value at the European level.

The management plans for Stikli and Klāņi Mires Nature Reserves are currently finalised but the management plans of Cena Mire and Veseta Floodplain Mire are already completed. About the results of the elaboration of management plan for Veseta Floodplain Mire informed Baiba Bambe and about Cena Mire – Inese Silamiķele.

During the presentations of the management plan experts, the main project management actions were stressed:

  • Conservation of rare and protected habitats in a natural status without any interference;
  • Building of dams on the drainage ditches to stop the further degradation of the mire habitats (Cena Mire, Vasenieks Mire, Klāņi Mire);
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of the management actions;
  • Management of transition mires and mineral rich spring mires by removing shrubs and pine;
  • Management of forest habitats and capercailie Tetrao urogallus leks;
  • Raising public awareness about mire values (information boards and signs, nature trails, watching towers, booklets).

    In 2006 a nature trail and a watching

    tower will be built in Cena Mire

Currently a film about all the 4 project sites is produced by Kaspars Goba and financed by Rīga Forest Agency. The first TV shot (18 minutes) about Cena Mire had a premiere at the meeting.
